So I bought my stationary bike a couple weeks ago by now and I love it. I've been riding it almost daily. It's more boring than actually bike rides where you can travel and enjoy nature and ride up and down hills and stuff, but it's also way more convenient.
I actually made a table to figure out how many minutes equals how many miles and how many calories burned and my usual speed and stuff. Basically these are my most frequent rides on there. I basically bike at about 10-12 MPH comfortably, and I push myself at times so I'm pretty sure I'm around 12 MPH over all.
15 min ride: 3 miles, 100 calories burned
30 min ride: 6 miles, 200 calories burned
45 min ride: 9 miles, 300 calories burned
60 min ride: 12 miles, 400 calories burned

So 1 hour to burn 400 calories is really good I think. It's close to what running gets me, especially since I usually have to break to walk sometimes when I run. And once in awhile I'll pedal as hard and fast as I can to really get my heart rate up a couple times during the ride.
I'm thinking of tracking things like my top speed, and my highest speed throughout an entire song and longest ride and stuff like that so I have goals to reach. I mean, it might be incentive to work out harder and make things more interesting. Like I don't know what this number is exactly, but it gives me a number for my speed and 16-18 seems to be where I ride casually, and later in my ride it's more like 19-20. So maybe I could do a ride where every other song I do 16-18 and then 23-25 to push myself. I sometimes hold it over 27 or something but only for a chorus or verse of a song, especially if it's super heavy. I've gotten it up to 37 when I pedal my fastest.
But yah, the only nights I really haven't worked out on my bike is when I've done a good amount of snow shoveling or walked the dog. So that's good. Basically I'm exercising 5 or 6 days a week.
Also, I sweat more on this bike than I thought! Like a 1 mile run, which takes me probably about 12 minutes might get me a little sweaty towards the end, if I run in colder weather. Well, insde on this bike I start sweating around 7 minutes or so and even if I do only 15 minutes I'm pretty sweaty at the end. If I do 30 minutes I pretty much have to take a shower, or should anyways. Sometimes I just go to bed once I dry off since I like to shower in the morning. So If I'm doing more than 15 I might as well do 45 minutes.
But yah, getting this bike was a great move. I like hopping on it better than going to the Y. I don't know. I like to exercise privately. Having lots of people around just makes me anxious sometimes. I'm not really into it. Plus, the Y is a 1/2 mile walk so it's kind of annoying to have to get my coat and scarf and everything and walk there and put everything in a locker and all that, and then have to do it again when I'm done and then maybe get home and take a shower, yet it's also too short to drive there. I do want to swim with Chrissie though and maybe do other weight training type stuff on my legs, or run on the treadmills, so I should still do that rather than cancel my membership. I mean, I've got it for only $20 a month which is really cheap and worth it. But I still need to use it.
